Bioenergy in the Engineering Classroom

Engineering is everything. The program curriculum brings broad engineering concepts to real world bioenergy and bioproducts industries career applications through an emphasis on Systems Thinking. Participants are introduced to the basic concepts of Systems Thinking and the complex inter-connections existing and being created in the emerging bioenergy and bioproducts industries.

Our curriculum brings Systems Thinking exercises and extension ideas into the following eight focus areas relating the emerging Bioeconomy workforce skills to systems engineering skills in these job sectors:

  • Sustainability
  • Systems Thinking
  • Biomass production and logistics
  • Liquid Biofuels (transportation)
  • Biomass for heat (warmth)
  • BioPower (electricity)
  • BioProducts (industrial chemicals and natural products)
  • Environmental Impacts, Policy & Economics

Each segment of the industry requires engineering skills to move forward. Many careers in the biobased economy use engineering every day. Here’s a brief sampling of experts needed in the emerging Biobased economy that use engineering skills in their jobs:

  • Systems engineers
  • Process engineers
  • Environmental Engineers
  • Chemical engineers
  • Logistics engineers
  • Bioprocessing Engineers
  • Mechanical Engineers
  • Civil Engineers
  • Forest Products Engineers
  • and more
